Basis Neuro is actively looking into the future. Our key priorities include a revolution in the personal gadget market through the introduction of compact and powerful neural interfaces for mass use, the development of a promising electronic platform for the interaction between all players in the neural market and their consumers, creation of new industries, and further technological improvements and scientific discoveries. A talented interdisciplinary team of the project, represented by specialists from different cities of our country, operates in collaboration and partnership with the authors of breakthrough developments in the high-tech field. We have also launched our token sale. We still have the world before us, but we have been making much headway over the past decade.

Of course, aside from the fact that many of us did not know each other at the beginning of the journey and there was no project base, there were no common IT solutions at the time that are now very popular and considered familiar, like blockchain. However, there was a starting point of fundamental research and applied developments, which formed the basis of our further development of neural interfaces per se and the strategy of their market packaging.

Humanitarian aspirations as a highroad to further mathematics and electrical engineering.
The Basis Neuro CTO, Dmitry Lazurenko, is a living example of the validity of this statement. When applying to the Faculty of Psychology of the Southern Federal University, Dmitry rather expected that his major would be within the psychology disciplines, and it was unlikely that he would have to develop devices for non-invasive transcranial brain stimulation with direct current. Not many people expect this being students of the Faculty of Psychology, do they?

Nevertheless, since his third year on the faculty, the issue of distribution of students by specialties was raised. At that time, Dmitry already knew that his goal was to work together with the best in their field, so the choice was made in favor of the Department of Psychophysiology and Clinical Psychology, where Professor Valery Nikolaevich Kiroi taught, a Doctor in Biology, author of 150+ academic papers, and honored academic. This decision predetermined the further area of Dmitry’s professional growth and development and became the first prerequisite for the future creation of a project in the neural industry, the scale of which was difficult to guess.

The educational process was exciting and triggered Dmitry’s active interest, so he found common language with his professor. Based on this mutual understanding and the desire to devote themselves to the study of fundamental issues, Kiroi and Lazurenko soon continued their joint work at the Kogan Research Institute of Neurocybernetics, the university branch where the professor was also a head of the laboratory and later the director.

The participation of students in the academic activities of the lab was comprehensively encouraged, which motivated the eagerness of the most talented and determined. The future CTO of Basis Neuro got acquainted with the developments in the field of brain-computer interfaces there, and this was another crucial moment at the early stage of the project development.

Dmitry began collaborating at the lab with engineer Yuri Gusach, who created electronic components for devices reading brain signals and stimulating the brain, as well as with the algorithm developer, Igor Shepelev, who later became one of key people in Basis Neuro.

The institute was the place where the personnel and technological base emerged to form the basis of the whole project. Multiple publications, patents, hardware and software suite and research orders began actively developing when the core of the lab’s specialists crystallized from people who looked into the future of neural technologies with interest and enthusiasm and worked hard to ensure that they found their place in society.

When working in the lab, Dmitry faced a number of fundamentally new tasks that clearly went beyond the standard curriculum, and therefore his willful decision was to independently master many elements of these technical specialties, ranging from higher mathematics and multidimensional statistics for “reading” and interpreting brain signals on electroencephalograms to skills of independent construction of neural equipment up to the creation of its smart components.

The work in the Research Institute originally was closely associated with fundamental research in psychophysiology, but the field gradually changed toward more applied developments, and in the first half of 2008 the lab announced the creation of a new method to control a computer with the power of thought, based on unique models of signal recognition. At the same time, a grant from the Federal Agency for Science and Innovation was obtained for further research and the creation of what was later supposed to transform the concept of personal neural interfaces.

Stepping out of the shade.
As the laboratory progressed in the study of psychophysiology and the creation of the first neural interfaces, the products of the scientific labor began to find practical application in the real world outside the institute. For example, CIAH, the largest scientific aviation center in Russia, placed one of the first orders for special neural equipment. Together, the two institutes developed and implemented a flight safety system — a device for monitoring the psychophysiological state of air traffic control officers by tracking their operable condition. Similar neural monitoring systems developed by the Research Institute of Neurocybernetics are currently used by airlines for pre-flight check of pilots as well.

The lab has always paid much attention to people with disabilities, helping them to improve their mobility and recover from injuries. In other words, the lab took all possible measures to help these people live a normal active life. Indeed, the lion’s share of developments appeared thanks to this dimension of activity, which served as the main point for the application of the team’s efforts.

Being engaged in a socially responsible activity, the lab fairly expected comprehensive support, primarily from the state, as well as from funds, private and institutional investors. Indeed, all levels of authorities, from local government to federal bodies, are well aware of the lab activities. External relations are being actively developed and supported and the lab receives grants for research, actively cooperates with funds in the social field and is not deprived of media attention. However system support is still not sufficient, because unfortunately, providing many fully and partly disabled citizens with sophisticated high-tech adaptation devices is not a priority program for the state.

The team of scientists could have continued their usual work by doing scientific research and trying to attract attention and achieve improvements by appealing to something lofty by making proposals and expecting approval.

But one day it came time to change the rules of the game.
