Unicorns' races

Yesterday I published a Gentle introduction into genetics of unicorns, and everyone was very interested in the RACE gene, which defines the unicorn race. So today I will briefly explain, how this gene is inherited and who will be born if one will pair unicorns of race 0 and 10. Please read carefully. And if necessary — ask questions in the comments. I'm here to answer you.

How we figured out, the RACE gene, in contrast to other genes, can only take values from 0 to 19, that is, there are 20 races for the horses. The rule of dominance for this gene is rather unusual (but if you are not afraid of mathematics, then for you it will be ordinary). All these 20 values from 0 to 19 are arranged as if in a dial. If you select a particular gene value, for example 5, then this value will dominate the ten values that are up to the number 5, if you look counter-clockwise. Well, that is over the values 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, but also over 19, 18, 17, 16 and 15. But the recessive value of 5 will be relative to the values from 6 to 14. In mathematics, this structure is called a ring residue modulo 20.

The RACE gene has a definite effect on the physical characteristics of the unicorn. In the process of research, we determined that each race has a high predisposition to one of the five physical characteristics, a slightly more moderate predisposition to the other, and the remaining three characteristics are very usual. Usual — because sometimes in any race can be «outstanding» specimens. So, there are five physical characteristics: strength, agility, speed, intelligence and charm. If one of them has a high predisposition in the race, then for the second there are only four options. Total number of races — 5 * 4 = 20. So it turned out. Well, among other things, the value of the RACE gene affects the color of the unicorn, but this is not exactly.

When one mates unicorns for the RACE gene, the usual rule of manifestation of the dominant allele is valid. That is, if you get a descendant from unicorns from races 5 and 8, then the descendant will enter the race 8. In fact, not exactly, since from the parent of race 8, the recessive allele of the gene can be passed. But we will learn about the variants of inheritance at some other time. And more... The mutation mechanism does not work for the RACE gene, as it is the very conservative gene. However, we will also learn about the mutation somehow later.
